Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What are the large machines on the outskirts of town?

Coming into the city from Highway 39 East or Highway 47 South, you will see draglines at work. Owned by Prairie Mines & Royalty Ltd., the draglines remove the overburden in the mine, exposing the coal. The coal is then loaded into coal haulers and taken to either Boundary Dam Power Station or Shand Power Station. If you are interested in seeing these machines up close, reserve your spot on a Guided Energy Tour.

Q. What kind of coal do you have?

The coal in this area is quite soft. It is a Grade A Lignite coal with a low sulfur content. It burns fairly quickly.

Q. What are the yellow flowers in the field?

There are two different yellow crops. Canola is an oil seed crop that produces beautiful, bright yellow flowers. Mustard is also a crop seed, producing a dark yellow flower.

Q. What are the blue-purple flowers in the field?

Flax is another oil seed crop that is known for its beautiful flowers. In July, fields become a blue-purple shade as the flax blossoms.

Q. How many oil wells are there in the area?

There are approximately 6000 oil wells within a 160 km radius of Estevan. Oil is piped underground to its destination.
