HOCKEY HISTORY
It all began in 1975.we were ‘Team Estevan’, average age 43. We did tournaments in Regina, Saskatoon & Penticton. In 1978 the club wanted a new name, a name to better describe the area we come from. So, we became the ‘Strippers’, not to suggest anything ‘off color’, but rather to let people know that we were from the area of Saskatchewan where the earth is ‘stripped’ from over the coal seam used to supply power to the Province. The team adopted ‘Granny’ from the Playboy magazine as their ‘mascot’, and Stripper Glen Gibson put his artistic talents to work, depicting ‘Granny’ reclining in the bucket of a dragline used to uncover the coal seam. Remember, this was back when ‘old timer’ hockey was just beginning, and Granny lets you know we were ‘old timers’. Since then the ‘Strippers’ have played tournaments in Florida, Oxbow, Winnipeg, Phoenix, Victoria, Vernon, Calgary, Medicine Hat, Brandon, Kelowna, Spokane, Moose Jaw, Regina, Edmonton, Swift Current, Santa Rosa, CA., Weyburn, Red Deer Saskatoon and Lethbridge. The club sponsors Saskatchewan’s largest tournament, catering to 28 teams. With proceeds from the tournaments the club has been regular contributors to community projects and needy personal appeals. 2007 is our 25th Anniversary, and what better project to raise money for, than our own hospital services. The Hospital Foundation are in need funds to upgrade their X-ray equipment, and the ‘Strippers’ are going to do their best to contribute to that fund. You can help. BUY A CALENDAR.
HOSPITAL HISTORY
With the loss of their 18 bed hospital on 5th St., destroyed by fire in 1936, the people of Estevan faced what seemed to be an impossible task…….to build a new hospital. The sisters of St. Joseph in Peterborough, ON., were approached and agreed to finance and staff a new Hospital in keeping with their mission. In 191938 a forty bed hospital was dedicated. A new wing was added in 1942. After the war the Airport Hospital became an annex to St. Joseph’s. A further expansion came in 1954. A new wing opened in 1956. In May 1964 another wing raised the bed capacity to 106. The alcohol treatment center was opened in 1969. In 1978 an Intensive Care Unit came on stream, and in 1985 a Day Hospital program was set up for elderly and disabled clients. An in-depth study in 1981-82 paved the way for a new St. Joseph’s Hospital Campaign which was implemented in 1984-85. Favorable support from Residents, Municipalities, Prov. Gov’t., Corporations, Clubs, Local Businesses and the Hospital family, made possible the construction of our Acute Care Hospital. Were all proud of St. Joseph’s and want to keep it, and it’s equipment up to date. The foundation is presently targeting new X-ray equipment and need our help.
